About Living Labs Learning

Our Mission

At Living Labs, we believe the best classrooms are alive.
Our mission is to help teachers and schools build, maintain, and use living systems that make science tangible, engaging, and sustainable.

We combine the reliability of professional support with the honesty teachers appreciate. No gimmicks, no jargon — just real systems, real learning, and real growth.

We handle the BS (BioSystems) so teachers can focus on what really matters: students and learning.

We Support Live Learning Environments

The majority of our work is helping schools keep existing living labs working.

Living Labs provides ongoing maintenance, troubleshooting, and system care for aquaponics, hydroponics, gardens, and greenhouses—so these environments remain active, reliable spaces for learning instead of becoming unused or broken.

When systems are supported well, learning can continue without interruption.

  We Partner With Teachers

Support doesn’t stop at the system.

Living Labs works alongside teachers through co-teaching, instructional coaching, and access to classroom-ready resources that help students learn from real, living systems. Our goal is to make these environments usable, meaningful, and connected to daily instruction.

This is a partnership built around learning, not add-ons.

We Design and Build When Schools Are Ready

In addition to supporting existing systems, Living Labs also helps schools design and implement new living labs or expand what they already have.

We guide planning, system selection, and long-term support so new environments are built to last—and to teach.

The Four Living labs

Aquaponics Labs

Integrated systems that teach cycles, balance, and systems thinking.

Aquaponics labs combine fish, plants, and water into a single living system. Students explore ecosystems, nutrient cycles, data collection, and cause-and-effect relationships through hands-on observation and care.

Living Labs supports aquaponics through ongoing maintenance, instructional partnership, and system optimization—so learning continues even as systems evolve.

Hydroponics Labs

Controlled growing environments for plant science and data-driven learning.

Hydroponics labs allow students to grow plants without soil, focusing on variables like light, nutrients, and water. These systems are ideal for experimentation, measurement, and cross-disciplinary STEM learning.

Living Labs helps schools maintain and use hydroponics systems reliably, while supporting teachers in connecting plant growth to meaningful instruction.

Outdoor Garden Labs

Place-based learning connected to food systems, ecology, and community.

Outdoor gardens provide powerful opportunities for hands-on, place-based learning. Students engage with soil science, ecology, nutrition, and environmental stewardship in a tangible way.

Living Labs supports garden labs through seasonal planning, maintenance support, and instructional integration—helping gardens remain active learning spaces, not just planted spaces.

Greenhouse Labs

Year-round environments that extend learning across seasons and disciplines.

Greenhouse labs offer controlled environments where learning can continue regardless of weather or season. They support long-term investigations, workforce connections, and advanced growing practices.

Living Labs partners with schools to maintain greenhouse systems, support instruction, and ensure these spaces are used consistently and effectively.

How it works

1. Understanding the Environment

1. Understanding the Environment

1. Understanding the Environment

We start by learning about your existing systems, spaces, and instructional goals. Whether you already have aquaponics tanks, garden beds, hydroponics units, or a greenhouse, we assess what’s working—and what needs support.

This step ensures we build on what’s already there.

2. Support the System

1. Understanding the Environment

1. Understanding the Environment

The foundation of our work is ongoing system care.

Living Labs provides maintenance, troubleshooting, and system optimization so living labs continue to function as intended. When systems are supported well, they remain safe, productive, and ready for learning.

This is where reliability is built.

3. Partner in the Classroom

3. Partner in the Classroom

Support doesn’t stop at equipment.

We work alongside teachers through co-teaching, instructional coaching, and access to learning resources that help connect living systems to daily instruction. Our goal is to make these environments usable and meaningful—not extra work.

This is where learning comes to life.

4. Grow and Adapt over Time

1. Understanding the Environment

3. Partner in the Classroom

As schools evolve, Living Labs adapts with them.

We help expand systems, introduce new learning opportunities, and plan for long-term sustainability across aquaponics, hydroponics, gardens, and greenhouses.

This is how living labs grow with students and educators.

Who We Work with

Living Labs partners with schools and educators who are committed to hands-on learning a reality.

Schools & Districts

We work with public, charter, and private schools to support existing aquaponics, hydroponics, gardens, and greenhouses. Our role is to help districts protect their investment by keeping systems functional, safe, and instructionally relevant over time.

Teachers & Instructional Teams

Teachers are at the center of everything we do. We support classroom educators through co-teaching, instructional coaching, and access to practical resources that make living systems usable within real instructional constraints.

STEM, CTAE, & Environmental Programs

Living Labs supports programs focused on STEM, sustainability, agriculture, and workforce-connected learning. We help ensure living environments are aligned to program goals and actively used by students—not sitting idle.

Schools with Existing Systems

Many of our partners already have systems in place. Living Labs specializes in stepping in, stabilizing, and supporting those environments so learning can continue without starting over.
